Paul Strand
American Photographer
Along with Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand (October 16, 1890 – March 31, 1976) made tremendous strides in establishing photography as a fine art. His modern-style photographs are noted for their sophisticated sense of composition, an absence of manipulation, and the highest quality in printing.
In 1921, he teamed up with fellow artist Charles Sheeler to film Manhatta, the world’s first avant-garde film that celebrates Manhattan by combining moving images of the quickly-growing city with excerpts from the writings of Walt Whitman.
