American artist Edward Hopper was born on this day in 1882. His easily recognizable style did not change for most of his long career that began in 1895 and continued until his death in 1963. Hopper mostly painted scenes that depict the loneliness of modern, urban life, for example isolated figures in cafés and theaters. He also is known for portraying that which was abandoned and secluded such as rural landscapes and seascapes. Most of his paintings feature strong light that is paradoxically cool in a palette of saturated colors. Hopper’s unique brand of realism is bright and melancholic.
