Inspired by the erotic stock images he stole from his time working at a New York magazine, artist David Salle uses multiple overlapping illustrations to convey confusion among audiences in his postmodern work, We’ll Shake the Bag.
A vibrant color contrast separates a pair of post-coital lovers whose detached, yet personal, moment is overpainted with silhouetted images of children innocently bobbing for apples. The distinct isolation of the couple and the lone child without an apple to bob for create a sinking feeling of loneliness, even among the most intimate of moments.
